Read this today in the U-T: http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/aug/27/veggie-grill-opens-utc-mall-la-jolla/.
Will it be as good as Native Foods? Only time will tell. Sounds worth a try!
With Tender Greens there, and Seasons 52 being on ok option too, UTC may become a veggie wonderland! (not to mention bottega italiana for delicious gelato dessert!

Quick takes: Katana, Urban Pi, Native Foods Cafe
Some quick reports:
Katana: we are going more and more. It's super kid-friendly. SuperBoy loves the little flashlights they give you with your soft drink, and he also loves their miso soup (with extra seaweed), plus edamame, rice and cubed tofu. I like the ex-boyfriend roll when it's on special. I am exploring their winelist. Had one bad Chard, but the La Crema chard is very good, and the Greg Norman pinot is super delish and not super expensive.
Native Foods: LOVE this place. Want to eat my way through the menu. Last time tried: Moroccan bowl, seitan sub, macrobiotic bowl (super yum, I could eat this often).
Urban Pi: Went successfully with a big group recently. I still believe in staying away from the nasty tomato sauce, but the other food there is good. Mom got a yummy white pizza. I got the delish beet and arugula salad with a yumm vegan corn soup-of-the day. I also like their pomegranate drink.
Want to take SuperBoy to Native Foods so can eat there more!

Native Foods (Encinitas): Best restaurant ever
Ok, I don't mean there are no restaurants better. I just mean for what I'm trying to eat right now, this place is the best invention anywhere.
All healthy plant-based (vegan) foods.
Tons of choices.
VERY delicious.
Very fast.
Very reasonable
Great servers!
Great drinks!
We enjoyed: lavendar lemonade and watermelon fresca (free refills!!)
Kale jerk salad: yum - sesame and coconut and tempeh cubes instead of caesar dressing, parmesan cheese and croutsin
Scorpion burger: delish, could have been bigger - not enough on its own for lunch
Split pea soup of the day: delish
Also got a double-chocolate brownie: not the most dietetic, but a healthy brownie considering: fair-trade cocoa, maple syrup, and chocolate chips (no eggs, butter, etc.)
Love, love, loved it. Can't wait to go back and try more of the menu!!

Coming to Encinitas: Native Foods Cafe
Was in the Trader Joes shopping center in Encinitas, and noticed an application for a liquor license in a window near The Kebab Shop. Native Foods Cafe: coming to Encinitas. The name sounded familiar.
Sure enough it is a gourmet vegan restaurant in the OC and other places: http://nativefoods.com/. Looks super delish. What a great option that will be - esp. with a liquor license!! (of course CH is not coming with me to a vegan restaurant so any interested friends should let me know! :))

Healthy vegetarian food at the SD County Fair (Del Mar)
I know, I know....the post title seems ridiculous. After all, isn't the fair for Chicken Charlie's Fried Twinkies and Fried Koolaid?
But Foodie Mom is trying to shed some of her foodie pounds, so it's not fried season for me. Plus I've gone to the fair 5 times already (2x with Super Toddler and 3x for concerts). Here are some of my favorite foods at the fair that just happen to be healthy and delicious.
--Roxy: Baked Falafel Burger: My perennial fair favorite. Really tasty (ask for it baked instead of fried).
--Baked sweet potato next to the corn shack. They try to get you to buy toppings, but it doesn't need any. Tastes yummy like jasmine just baked. A real treat!
--Palapa Taco's Healthy Veg Burrito: Herbal tortilla, veg beans, lots of veggies and soy cheese. Sounds crazy to eat at the fair and kind of questionable, but was super yummy, high fiber, low fat, etc. They also have a spinach wrap.
--Grilled corn next to the sweet potatos (near O'Brien Gate). Always good.
--I did sneak some kettle corn before one of the shows too.
The cheese pizza that the boys have been getting is gross wherever they get it from, and my friend's BBQ today was so bad (soggy fries, etc.) that she returned it. The chili fries she got from Fresh Friez afterward were much better.
There is healthy yummy food to be had at the fair if you look!
ST loves him some rides, so we'll probably hit the fair one more time before it closes.
